The HBO Original series, a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original seven books, has been actively filming its first season since last summer. We've just learned that Benjamin Caron, an acclaimed director with a strong background in prestige television, will be helming an unspecified number of episodes for the inaugural season.
Caron's impressive resume includes fan-favorite series such as Andor, The Crown, Sherlock, Wallander, and Skins. He joins an already announced team of directors, including co-showrunner Mark Mylod (Succession, The Menu), who is directing the first two episodes, and Lucy Forbes (The End of the Fing World, This is Going to Hurt*), set to direct episodes three and four.
The first season is expected to consist of eight episodes. We still don't know if a fourth director will be announced, but this trio certainly brings a wealth of experience to the magical world.
This news comes shortly after HBO CEO Casey Bloys provided a more specific timeframe for the series' debut. He stated, "We’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027."
Filming for the series, which features a cast including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, is expected to continue until May 2026. Production for Season 2 is planned to begin soon after Season 1 wraps, following a short break, as part of the ambitious seven-season, 10-year production cycle.
